St Rose of Lima, feast day 23rd August 2022
The first canonized saint of the New World was born in Lima, Peru when Christianity was still new in South America. At a very young age, she chose to consecrate her life to God. She practiced very intense prayer and penance each day. She was very beautiful, but didn’t want to be vain, so she used to rub her face with pepper to make it blotchy and wore on her head an uncomfortable circlet of silver like a crown on thorns to show her devotion to Christ. Her family laughed at her and tried to stop her, but she persisted.
